Participatory dissemination: bridging in-depth interviews, participation, and creative visual methods through Interview-Based Zine-Making (IBZM)

In this article, I make the case for an underexplored research practice – participatory dissemination and reflectively introduce a new method, IBZM (Interview-Based Zine-Making), which developed in my fieldwork on gentrifying neighborhood of Bushwick, Brooklyn, New York City. Participatory is that engages participants interpretation preliminary findings, through art-based methods, leads to coproduction visual outputs communication diversified audiences, especially those beyond solely academic readers. has received little attention within debates thus far. The paper addresses gap literature by outlining rationale potential incorporating processes dissemination, even where so-called traditional (non- or less-participatory) methods are used. follows technique zine-making (that is, cutting, rearranging, creatively pasting printed materials pamphlet), but instead using media texts pictures as raw materials, works with transcribed from researcher-conducted interviews. aim let (zine-makers) engage perspectives interviewees find assonances, disagreements, connections their own thoughts. output collectively produced zine be further disseminated. offers means combining detached such interviews, creative/visual methods. As such, can helpful bridging literatures providing avenues researchers working primarily latter incorporate elements into process outputs.
